What Not to Do at Cemeteries

April 18, 2022
cemeteries in Windsor, NJ

Is your family going to be spending some time at one of the cemeteries in Windsor, NJ sometime soon? Whether you’re going to be burying a loved one at a cemetery or simply visiting a loved one’s gravesite, you should be sure that everyone is on their best behavior. You should also be sure that you do not do certain things at a cemetery that could cause a commotion. Check out what not to do at cemeteries below.

Arrive after dark.

Just about every Windsor, NJ cemetery opens when the sun comes up and closes when the sun goes down. Because of this, you should make it a point not to arrive after dark at a cemetery at any point. Most cemeteries will shut their gates to keep people out after dark. But even if a cemetery doesn’t do this, you should still shy away from going to a cemetery after dark. You’ll only want to spend time in one when the sun is still up.

Walk on top of other people’s graves.

When you’re making your way to a loved one’s gravesite in a cemetery, you’ll likely have to walk past many other people’s graves. Your job is going to be to stay on paths in a cemetery and not cut across the top of anyone’s grave. If you happen to do this, you should make your way back to a path ASAP and avoid disrespecting anyone’s grave. You could upset their family a whole lot if you walk on a person’s gravesite.

Touch headstones and other permanent memorials.

The headstones and other permanent memorials in a cemetery might look strong and durable. And they are! But that doesn’t mean that you should walk around touching them. At best, you’re going to be disrespecting other people’s graves by touching their memorials, and at worst, you’re going to run the risk of doing damage to them if you touch them in the wrong way. So you should stay away from other people’s memorials and steer clear of touching them at all.

Speak with other people.

If you cross paths with other people at a cemetery, you might be tempted to stop and say hello to them. But you should try not to do this unless they say hello to you and you’re feeling up to responding to them. You never know who is having an especially tough time visiting a loved one’s gravesite at a cemetery. So you should try not to get into the habit of talking to other people at cemeteries too often. The last thing that you want to do is disrupt others at a cemetery.
